Abstract

An apparatus having an electrical generator and an energy transfer device coupled to the generator. The energy transfer device has a first capacitor having a capacitance of at least 1 Farad and storing at least 1 MegaJoule of energy, a high-energy inductor coupled to the first capacitor, a second capacitor having capacitance of at least 100 Farads, a switch coupling the second capacitor to the first capacitor and configured to store energy from the first capacitor in the second capacitor through the inductor when in a closed state. The apparatus further has an energy transfer controller controlling an open or closed state of the switch, and an electrical motor coupled to the energy transfer device and a mechanical drive system.
