Abstract
Lateritic nickel ores which also contain magnesia are subjected to a low temperature reduction using carbon monoxide as the sole reductant and are then subjected to a higher temperature heat treatment in an inert atmosphere for a time sufficient to stabilize the nickel in a readily extractable state. The reduction is accomplished at a temperature in the range of 300 to 450.degree.C and the heat treatment is carried out at a temperature above about 650.degree.C.
