Abstract
A liquid crystal display device includes a display panel comprised of upper and lower transparent plates having a liquid crystal material sandwiched therebetween. A reflecting plate having a roughened upper surface is disposed beneath the lower transparent plate with the roughened surface facing the lower transparent plate. A light source is located alongside one side edge of the reflecting plate and coacts with a light-reflecting hood which encases the display panel, light source and reflecting plate to direct the light emitted from the light source throughout all portions of the display panel. By locating the light source along the side of the reflecting plate and by employing the light reflecting hood, the resultant liquid crystal display device may be made very thin and therefore suitable for use in wrist watches.
