Abstract

The disclosure relates to a control system for use in an information retrieval system. The control system adapts the retrieval system for locating a preselected information bearing element wherein the information bearing elements comprise a first set of elements numbered consecutively in a first direction for identification and a second set of elements numbered consecutively in a second direction for identification and wherein each element of the first set is associated with an identifiable marker comprising a first set of markers and each element of the second set is associated with an identifiable marker comprising a second set of markers. The control system includes a marker sensor for sensing the first and second sets of markers, a marker sensor detector for detecting which set of markers is being sensed and interface means for selectively coupling the marker sensor to the retrieval system counter in response to the detector to enable the counter to maintain the location of the elements as the elements are driven. The control system also adapts the retrieval system for locating a preselected group of elements and a preselected element in the preselected group where the elements…
