Abstract

An organotin dihalide having the formula ##STR1## OR A MIXTURE OF THE DIHALIDE AND AN ORGANOTIN TRIHALIDE IS PREPARED BY REACTING METALLIC TIN WITH AN OLEFIN HAVING THE FORMULA ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical and at least one of R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 contains an oxygen-containing group with a carbonyl group adjacent to the olefinic double bond and Hal is a halogen. The organotin dihalide or mixture thereof with a trihalide is reacted with an acid or mercaptan to produce a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride polymers and the like.
