Abstract

Monoketals of esters and amides of aromatic .alpha.,.beta.-dioxocarboxylic acids having the formula EQU R -- CO -- C(OR.sub.1)(OR.sub.2) -- COX].sub.m wherein m is 1 or 2, R is a mono- or divalent aromatic residue, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are monovalent organic residues and X is an alkoxy or amino groups, are photoinitiators for the UV-curing of resins. Examples for such resins are acrylates, methacrylates or unsaturated polyesters. The most important application for such photochemical curing is the field of coatings and printing inks.
