Abstract

A process for the production of olefin polymers which comprises contacting at least one olefin monomer with an olefin polymerization catalyst comprising: PA1 (1) a solid compound of titanium, vanadium or zirconium wherein the metal has a valency below its maximum, PA1 (2) a Grignard reagent which is substantially ether free, EQU Mg[Al(C.sub.2 H.sub.5).sub.4 ].sub.2, Mg(C.sub.6 H.sub.5).sub.2, a lithium aluminium tetraalkyl, an aluminium hydrocarbyl halide, an aluminium hydrocarbyl sulphate, an aluminium hydrocarbyl oxyhydrocarbyl, an aluminium trihydrocarbyl or a dihydrocarbyl aluminium hydride, the improvement of adding to the polymerization system up to C.sub.a /f molecular proportions of a trivalent phosphorus compound of the formula EQU PR'.sub.3-n (X--A--Y).sub.n wherein PA1 R' is halogen, a hydrocarbyl group, the group --NR.sub.2 or the group --OR; PA1 x is --O--, --S-- or --NR--; PA1 A is a bivalent hydrocarbyl radical such that X and Y are separated by not more than 3 carbon atoms; PA1 Y is --OR, --SR, --NR.sub.2, --PR.sub.2, a pyridyl radical, a quinolyl radical, an isoquinolyl radical, a furyl radical or a tetrahydrofuryl radical; PA1 R is a hydrocarbyl group; PA1 C.sub.a…
