Abstract
Polyphenylene ethers produced by an oxidative coupling of a phenol in the presence of an oxygen-containing gas and a metal-amine complex catalyst are freed of catalyst and stabilized against molecular weight loss. Removal of the metal component and molecular weight loss control are effected by contacting the solution with a compound capable of selectively complexing with the metal in combination with a dihydric phenol and a mild reducing agent. The process is less expensive than prior art procedures because less dihydric phenol is needed, and the metallic residue content of the polyphenylene ether is reduced to very low levels.
