Abstract

Olefinic hydrocarbons containing from 2 to about 6 carbon atoms are oligomerized by treatment with a heterogeneous oligomerization catalyst which has been prepared by heating a metal oxide, thereafter contacting the metal oxide with titanium tetrachloride vapor in a series of steps at progressively higher temperatures ranging from about 50.degree. to about 600.degree. C. and thereafter heating the impregnated metal oxide in contact with hydrogen gas at an elevated temperature in the range of from about 300.degree. to about 700.degree. C. to reduce the titanium to a valence state of less than +4.
