Abstract
A self-propelled wheel-chair capable of climbing up or down a curb is disclosed. The wheel-chair is able to elevate an occupant higher than existing types of wheel-chairs practically to the height of a person standing. The wheel-chair has a seat assembly mounted on a frame, a first pair of drive wheels on a horizontal fixed axis supporting the frame, each of the first pair positioned on either side and below the seat assembly, two independent driving means, one for forward and backward rotation of each of the first pair of drive wheels, a second pair of wheels on a common axis parallel to the horizontal fixed axis, the second pair of wheels having drive connecting means with adjacent first pair of drive wheels such that one of the two independent driving means drives one of the first pair of drive wheels, and, through the drive connecting means, one of the second pair of drive wheels, a pair of link arms located one on each side of the seat assembly, each of the pair of link arms pivotally mounted from the frame and supporting one of the second pair of drive wheels on the common axis, pivoting means for pivoting the pair of link arms together, and a support means attached to the fr…
