Abstract
Octafluoropropane, C.sub.3 F.sub.8, is prepared by a two-step process. In the first step hexafluoropropene is reacted with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of a chromium oxyfluoride catalyst. The 2H-heptafluoropropane obtained is reacted with fluorine in the presence of a catalyst which contains a subgroup element of the Periodic System as a free metal or as a fluoride. Octafluoropropane is isolated from the resulting gas mixture. Hydrogen fluoride also obtained may be recycled to the first reaction step.
