The method involves applying 1-20% (owg) of a flame retardant material and 1-10% (owg) of a water repellent material to the zipper coil followed by drying and curing for about 3 to about 7 minutes at about 150.degree. to about 225.degree. C., or drying for about 2 to about 4 minutes at about 120.degree. to about 150.degree. C. and then curing for about 1 to about 5 minutes at about 150.degree. to about 220.degree. C. The flame retardant material and the water repellent material could be applied together or sequentially.
