Abstract

Ammonium carboxylates having the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical. The defined carboxylates promote the formation of alkane polyols in a homogeneous liquid phase mixture wherein hydrogen and carbon monoxide are reacted in the presence of a rhodium carbonyl complex at a temperature of from about 100.degree. C. to 375.degree. C. and a pressure of from about 500 psia to about 50,000 psia.
