Abstract
A polyethylene is produced by polymerizing ethylene with or without a comonomer in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an organometallic compound and a solid catalytic component (B) obtained by reacting a titanium or vanadium halide with a reaction product (A) in the presence of one or more aluminum alkoxide having the formula EQU Al(OR.sup.2).sub.n X.sub.3-n wherein R.sup.2 represents a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group and X represents a halogen atom and 0<n.ltoreq.3, or a reaction product of said aluminum alkoxide and water. The reaction product (A) is obtained by reacting a Grignard reagent with an organosilicon compound selected from the group consisting of hydropolysiloxanes having the structural units of EQU R.sup.1.sub.a H.sub.b SiO.sub.(4-a-b/2) (I) wherein R.sup.1 represents an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy or aryloxy group; a is 0, 1 or 2; b is 1, 2 or 3; and a+b.ltoreq.3, and organosilicon compounds having the formula EQU R.sup.3.sub.n Si(OH).sub.4-n (II) wherein R.sup.3 represents a C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 hydrocarbon moiety and n is 1, 2 or 3, and polycondensates of the compound (II).
