Abstract
A connector construction for joining optical fiber ends in an optical signal transmissive system comprises interlocking, telescoping plug and receptacle connector members. Each member engages a cable end from which at least one optical fiber extends. The fiber terminal portion in the receptacle is received in an adjacently mounted optical fiber guide having a passageway in which the fiber joint is to be effected. The optical fiber end or ends in the connector plug is received in a retractable, protective cylinder having an apertured distal end adapted to mate with the distal end of the optical fiber guide of the connector receptacle. The connector receptacle is telescopically received in the housing of the connector plug as the fiber(guide distal end mates with the retractable cylinder and forces such cylinder to retract in the direction of the plug clamp. Simultaneously, the optical fiber extending from the plug clamp is passed through the distal end of the optical fiber passageway and engages the fiber end extending from the connector receptacle in an efficient joint. Two connector embodiments are provided. In a first connector embodiment, receptacle spring arms having locking lu…
