Abstract

Described is a method of activating a carbonaceous electrode comprising the steps; PA0 1. Providing a negative electrode and a carbonaceous positive electrode spaced apart from each other; PA0 2. Providing an aqueous electrolyte with a current carrying water soluble material therein; and PA0 3. Closing the circuit and passing a current between the positive and negative electrodes through the electrolyte thereby generating oxygen for a period of time sufficient to activate the positive electrode. The electrodes are useful in a metal halogen electrical energy storage device.
