Abstract

The invention relates to acrylyl or methacrylyl ureas containing novel quaternary groups of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is hydrogen or a methyl group, PA1 R is a lower alkyl radical having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, PA1 m is 0 or 1, PA1 n is an integer between 1 and 4, and PA1 Z is a salt-forming anion. The compounds are prepared from the corresponding halogen-substituted ureas by reaction with trialkylamines, preferably in a solvent. Because of their double bond, they can be polymerized to homopolymers and copolymers which are suited for use as flocculating, precipitating, dewatering and retention aids.
