Abstract

A novel production process of .beta.-chloroalanine from chloroacetaldehyde is provided. In this process, a bisulfite or sulfite addition compound of chloroacetaldehyde is first reacted, in an aqueous solution, with ammonia and, then, reacted with hydrocyanic acid or a salt thereof. Thus, .alpha.-amino-.beta.-chloropropionitrile is formed. This .alpha.-amino-.beta.-chloropropionitrile is hydrolyzed under an acidic condition to form .beta.-chloroalanine.
