16-dimethylaminomethylene-3-methoxy-1,3,5(10)-estratrien-17-one is a valuable new preparative intermediate which may be used, e.g., to prepare 17.beta.-hydroxy-16.beta.-ethyl-4-estren-3-one or 16.beta.-ethylestradiol.
