Abstract

A process for the preparation of curable polyadducts, possessing basic nitrogen groups, wherein (A) monophenols and/or polyphenols, which contain groups of the general formula (I): ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are identical or different and each is hydrogen or methyl are reacted with (B) amines having one or more primary and/or secondary amino groups, and the adduct formed is reacted with (C) epoxide compounds having from 1 to 4 epoxide groups per molecule and having a molecular weight of at most 2,500, the ratio of the phenolic hydroxyl groups of (A) to epoxide groups of (C) being from 1:0.5 to 1:2 and the amine (B) being employed in such amount that the resulting polyadduct of (A), (B) and (C) contains from 0.1 to 5% by weight of basic nitrogen, and the use of the products, after protonation with an acid, as binders for the production of coatings, especially for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.
