Abstract

The process for manufacture of an N-hydroxyalkylcarbazole of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is H, CH.sub.3 or C.sub.2 H.sub.5 and n is a number from 0 to 4 which comprises reacting carbazole with an epoxide of the formula ##STR2## or a chlorohydrin of the formula ##STR3## at temperatures from 20.degree. to 150.degree. C. in the presence of a base and a phase transfer catalyst, in an organic solvent which is immiscible with water.
