Abstract
Aqueous solutions containing alkylamido betaines and certain water-soluble inorganic or organic salts provide compositions of remarkably high viscosities. The inorganic salts suitable for this purpose are the sulfates of metals from Groups IA, IIA, IIB, and IIIA of the period table; sulfates of non-metallic ions; and alkali metal carbonates. Organic salts suitable in the present compositions include the citrates, tartrates, succinates, and carboxymethyloxysuccinates of metals from Groups IA, IIA, IIB and IIIA of the period table and the citrates, tartrates, succinates and carboxymethyloxysuccinates of ammonium ions. These salts have a synergistic viscosity-building effect on aqueous compositions containing alkylamido betaines in combination with micelle-forming anionic surfactants. Other salts increase the viscosity of aqueous solutions containing alkylamido betaines only in the presence of anionic surfactants. Suitable inorganic salts in this category include sulfates of metals from Group IB of the period table; alums; alkali metal sesquicarbonates; alkali metal tripolyphosphates and pyrophosphates; salts of halogen acids selected from the group consisting of potassium chloride an…
