Abstract
An apparatus is disclosed for receiving a high pressure fluid flow to accommodate a drop to a lower pressure fluid flow with attenuated noise, incorporating an initial diffuser stage followed by balance in-line stages so that each stage is subcritical to avoid shock noise. Specifically, an elongated tubular member is closed at one end and adapted to receive high pressure fluid flow at the opposed end. Perforations contiguous to the upstream end afford a diffuser stage of pressure reduction which is followed by concentrically mounted, perforated plates to accomplish staged pressure drops. Structurally, the elongate tubular member is fixed somewhat concentrically in a cylindrical housing along with a series of the perforated plates which are peripherally supported by the housing and centrally supported by the elongated tubular member. A diffuser as the first stage affords superior strength to withstand impacts and pressure loading. The subsequent perforated plate stages are balanced so that the pressure drop across each of the plates is preserved below the critical level. Supporting the plates concentrically by an extension of the elongated tubular member as well as peripherally by t…
