Abstract

A substrate that has a finish of a clear coat top layer in firm adherence to a color coat layer containing pigments that is in adherence to the substrate; the clear coat and color coat are formed from a high solids coating composition contains at least 50% by weight of a binder of film-forming constituents in which the constituents are of PA0 (A) a medium molecular weight acrylic polymer that has a number average molecular weight of about 5,000-20,000, a hydroxyl content of at least 2% by weight, a glass transition temperature of about -20.degree. C. to +20.degree. C.; PA0 (B) a low molecular weight acrylic polymer that has a number average molecular weight of about 500-7,500 a hydroxyl content of at least 2% by weight, a glass transition temperature of about -20.degree. C. to +25.degree. C.; wherein the acrylic polymers are the same or different and contain and alkyl methacrylate, a hydroxy alkyl acrylate or a hydroxy alkyl methacrylate, and optionally, an alkyl acrylate and styrene; PA0 (C) an alkylated melamine formaldehyde cross-linking agent; and PA0 an acid catalyst; PA0 clear coat/color coat finishes are particularly useful as an exterior finish for automobiles, trucks and a…
