Abstract
An improved process for the preparation of para-amino diphenylamine in which para-nitroso-diphenylhydroxylamine is catalytically hydrogenated in the presence of an organic solvent and one or more metal components selected from the group consisting of ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, and their sulfidic compounds, at temperatures from 20.degree. to 200.degree. C., is disclosed. The improvement comprises utilizing as the organic solvent one or more members of the group consisting of aniline and aniline derivatives containing ring-alkyl groups, N-alkyl groups, or a combination thereof, wherein the ring-alkyl groups contain a total of 1 to 6 carbon atoms and the N-alkyl groups contain from 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
