Abstract

Compounds of the general formula ##STR1## [wherein X represents a sulphur atom (--S--) or oxygen atom (--O--) in the .alpha. or .beta.-configuration; PA0 X.sup.1 represents a C.sub.1-5 straight chain or branched alkylene group or C.sub.3-5 straight chain or branched alkenylene group; PA0 X.sup.2 represents a carboxyl, carboxamide, hydroxymethlene, alkoxycarbonyl or 5-tetrazolyl group; PA0 Z represents a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1-4 straight chain or branched alkyl group; PA0 Y represents a group of formula --CR.sub.2 -CH.sub.2 -- in which each R is independently selected from hydrogen and methyl; PA0 Y.sup.1 represents a methylene group substituted by hydroxyl, a methylene group substituted by hydroxyl and alkyl, a methylene group or carbonyl group, and PA0 Y.sup.2 represents a C.sub.1-7 straight chain or branched alkyl group, phenyl, benzyl or a C.sub.4-7 cycloalkyl group] and salts of those compounds of formula (I) wherein X.sup.2 represents a carboxyl group and/or wherein Z represents a hydrogen atom.
