Ammonium compounds of the formula ##STR1## in which R and R.sub.1 designate C.sub.1 -C.sub.21 -alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.21 -alkenyl, PA1 R' designates hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, PA1 R.sub.2 designates C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or hydroxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, PA1 R.sub.3 designates hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl and PA1 A.sup..crclbar. represents an anion of the formula ##STR2## in which R.sub.4 designates hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy and PA1 R.sub.5 designates C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -hydroxyalkyl, a process for their preparation and their use as softeners for fibre materials.
