Abstract
A process to reduce SiO.sub.2 to produce Si, includes the steps: PA1 (a) reacting SiO.sub.2 with a saturated hydrocarbon at elevated temperature in a retort, to produce molten Si, and gases including SiO, CO, H.sub.2 and H.sub.2 O, PA1 (b) removing such gases from the retort and separating SiO in a first stream and CO, H.sub.2 O and H.sub.2 in a second stream, PA1 (c) combusting the second stream to produce heat, and PA1 (d) utilizing such heat to aid the reaction in the retort.
