Abstract

Crystalline, basic magnesium aluminum hydroxycarbonate of the formula EQU Al.sub.2 Mg.sub.6 (OH).sub.12 (CO.sub.3).sub.3.xH.sub.2 O where x is at least 4. A process for producing it comprises the conversion of aluminum hydroxide with basic magnesium carbonate and at least one compound selected from magnesium hydroxide and magnesium oxide. Stoichiometric quantities are employed with reference to the aluminum and the magnesium. The conversion takes place at temperatures from 50.degree. to 100.degree. C., and the resulting product is subsequently spray dried.
