Abstract

Branched, high molecular weight, thermoplastic polyarylene ethers which contain nitrile groups and are composed of repeating units of the formula I EQU --E.sub.1 --O--E.sub.2 --O-- where E.sub.1 is a radical derived from a dihalobenzene compound and E.sub.2 is a radical derived from a bisphenol, and contain from 0.01 to 5 mol %, based on the radical E.sub.1, of one or more radicals derived from polyhalo compounds of the formulae ##STR1## where X is fluorine or chlorine, and their preparation.
