Abstract

Surface sizing agents for paper containing aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic alkali metal, amine or ammonium salt solutions of copolymers of maleic anhydride and diisobutylene and, if appropriate, a vinyl monomer of the formula ##STR1## in which R designates H, --CH.sub.3, --C.sub.2 H.sub.5, --OR.sub.2, --OCOCH.sub.3, ##STR2## or --CH.sub.2 --O--COCH.sub.3, R.sub.1 designates H or --CH.sub.3 and PA1 R.sub.2 designates alkyl, the anhydride groups of the copolymers being bis-esterified to the extent of 25-90 mol % with primary aliphatic monoalcohols with 1 to 12 C atoms.
