Abstract
Novel bis-phosphonium salts of the general formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 stands for a straight or branched alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, PA1 R.sup.2 stands for methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or iso-propyl, and PA1 X.sup..crclbar. stands for a monovalent anion or complex anion, or PA1 2 X.sup..crclbar. stands for a bivalent inorganic anion, are made. To this end, a triorganylphosphonium alkylide of the general formula R.sub.3.sup.1 P=CHR.sup.2 is reacted with an anhydrous copper(II)-halide in a solvent at temperatures of -78.degree. C. to 0.degree. C. with agitation, precipitated bis-phosphonium dihalogenocuprate(I) is separated and, if desired, converted by metathesis into another bis-phosphonium salt.
