Abstract

Nitrile group-containing polymers are hydrogenated in a homogeneous phase with preservation of the nitrile groups in a low molecular weight ketone as a solvent and with a compound corresponding to formula EQU RuX[(L.sub.1)(L.sub.2).sub.n ] as a catalyst, wherein PA1 X represents hydrogen, halogen PA1 L.sub.1 represents hydrogen, halogen, optionally substituted cyclopentadienyl, PA1 L.sub.2 represents a phosphane, bisphosphane or arsane and PA1 n is 1, 2 or 3 and PA1 [(L.sub.1)(L.sub.2).sub.n ] represents a cyclopentadienyl bisphosphane.
