Abstract

A method for uniformly encoding data occurring in words of different lengths redefines the words into units or sets having a length determined by the possible lengths of the words, but independent of the particular length of the words operated on. A first method according to the present invention forms the words into an array having two directions of adjacent words defined therein, and groups the adjacent words into units having a length equal to an integer times a least common multiple of the possible word lengths. A second method according to the present invention groups words of input data into respective sets such that the number of bits in a set of words of a first length equals the number of bits in a set of words of a second length.
