Abstract

The invention relates to polyoxyalkylene quaternized salts as phase transfer catalysts for liquid/liquid phase cyclopropanation, substitution or addition reactions involving a normally liquid or solvent soluble olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon and the process in which said quaternary compound is utilized. The involved quaternized salts are defined by the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is alkyl having 8 to 30 carbon atoms, blends thereof or alkyl-substituted phenyl of 10 to 24 carbon atoms; PA0 n has a value of from 2 to 14 and includes mixtures within said range; PA0 R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are hydrogen atoms or one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is methyl; PA0 R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are independently hydrogen, an alkyl radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or phenyl or one of R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 is an .beta.-ethyl-alkali metal sulfonate; PA0 A is a phosphorous or a nitrogen atom; and halo is a chlorine or bromine ion.
