Abstract

The invention relates to a catalyst composition for polymerization of norbornene-type monomer: including WCl.sub.4 O and WCl.sub.6 in a molar ratio of WCl.sub.4 O to WCl.sub.6 from 1:9 to 1:1 (i.e., 10-50% WOCl.sub.4 and 90-50% WCl.sub.6). The method of making catalyst includes: providing catalyst precursor material, the major portion of which is WCl.sub.6, and contacting controlled proportions of the oxygen donor and WCl.sub.6 to form WCl.sub.4 O in a molar ratio to WCl.sub.6 of between 1:9 and 1:1.
