Organosilicon compounds of the formula I EQU R.sup.1 --A.sup.1 --A.sup.2 --O--C.sub.n H.sub.2n --SiX.sub.a Y.sub.b Z.sub.c I wherein R.sup.1, A.sup.1, A.sup.2, X, Y, Z, n, a, b and c have the meaning given can be used for producing a homotropic orientation of liquid crystal phases on surfaces.
