Abstract

A method for preparing high molecular weight polyetherimide ester polymers comprising: PA0 (A) preparing a polyetherimide ester oligomer by coreacting PA1 (i) at least one diol, PA1 (ii) at least one dicarboxylic acid or an ester forming reactive derivative thereof, and PA1 (iii) a set of reactants selected from PA2 (a) (1) at least one high molecular weight poly(oxy alkylene)diamine, and (2) at least one tricarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof, or PA2 (b) at least one high molecular weight polyoxyalkylene diimide diacid, PA0 at elevated temperature and for a period of time effective to form said oligomer; and then PA0 (B) further polymerizing said oligomer by a solid phase polycondensation procedure comprising heating said oligomer at a temperature effective to further polymerize said oligomer to a high molecular weight polyetherimide ester polymer but below the melting point of said oligomer. The instant process is useful for forming high molecular weight polyetherimide ester polymers suitable for production of extruded and molded articles.
