Abstract
Lubricating oils are described which are useful in two-cycle engines. These oils contain a minor amount of at least one phenolic compound of the general formula: PA1 (R).sub.a --AR--(OH).sub.b, or salts thereof, wherein R is a substantially saturated, hydrocarbon-based group of an average of at least 10 aliphatic carbon atoms; a and b are each independently an integer of one up to three times the number of aromatic nuclei present in Ar with the proviso that the sum of a and b does not exceed the unsatisfied valences of Ar; and Ar is a linked polynuclear moiety wherein the bridging linkages are sulfur-containing moieties, having 0 to 3 optional substituents consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, methylol or lower hydrocarbon-based substituted methylol, halo and combinations of two or more of said optional substituents.
