Abstract

Indanes are prepared by reacting substituted or unsubstituted benzyl halides with olefins in the presence of a Lewis acid as catalyst by reacting benzyl halides I ##STR1## (where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 =hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, cycloalkyl, aryl, aryloxy, aralkyl PA0 R.sup.3 =R.sup.1, halogen or an ortho-fused ring system PA0 X=halogen) with olefins II ##STR2## (where R.sup.4 to R.sup.7 =hydrogen or alkyl unbranched at alpha) in the presence of catalytic amounts of titanium tetrachloride.
