Abstract
Methods for treating mammals to reduce pain, reduce cell proliferation and/or reduce inflammation are described based on administering to the mammals compounds having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are hydrogen or an acyl residue hydrocarbon having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R.sub.5 is hydrogen or CH.sub.2 OH and R.sub.6 is a functionalized hydrocarbon having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. Natural and synthetic 1,12-seco derivatives of pseudopterosin with similar utilities are disclosed. Synthetic compositions having the above general formula which are useful in the method are disclosed.
