Abstract

A silicone/silicate containing antifreeze characterized by dilute aqueous stability includes phosphonate silanes characterized by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein a is 0 or 1, b is 1 or 2, c is 0 or 1, R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, monovalent hydrocarbon radicals and substituted monovalent hydrocarbon radicals, R.sup.2 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical selected from the group consisting of alkylene, arylene and alicyclic radicals, Z is a hydrolyzable moeity attached to silicon, and X is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, monovalent hydrocarbon radicals, substituted monovalent hydrocarbon radicals, and a monovalent cation, the phosphonate silane having an appropriate hydrophile/hydrophobe balance and being present in an amount sufficient to stabilize the silicate.
