Abstract

The invention relates to liquid crystal phases (LC phases) having a particularly low threshold voltage, a particularly low ratio K.sub.3 /K.sub.1 of the elastic constants for bending (K.sub.3) and spreading (K.sub.1) and broad nematic phase ranges, these phases containing at the same time at least one highly polar component of reduced degree of association and, to reduce the quotient K.sub.3 /K.sub.1 of the elastic constants for bending (K.sub.3) and spreading (K.sub.1) of the phases to a value.ltoreq.1.1, at least one apolar liquid crystal component.
