Abstract

This invention encompasses compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein: one of R.sup.1 or R.sup.2 is nitro and the other is --SO.sub.3 H or COOH; and PA1 one of R.sup.3 or R.sup.4 is hydrogen and the other is --NR.sup.5 R.sup.6, where R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, or C.sub.2-4 hydroxyalkyl; or a water soluble salt thereof; hair dye preparations containing the above compounds as substantive hair dyes; and methods for dyeing hair using such preparations.
