Abstract

Dyes according to the formula: ##STR1## are useful as filter dyes in photographic elements. In this formula, n is 1 or 2. R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or substituted or unbsubstituted aryl, or together represent the atoms necessary to complete a substituted or unsubstituted 5- or 6-membered ring. Also, if R.sub.7 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, R.sub.1 is H. R.sub.3 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl. R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 each independently represents H, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, secondary or tertiary amino, CO.sub.2 H, or NHSO.sub.2 R.sub.6, with the proviso that at least one of R.sub.4, R.sub.5, or a substituent on an aryl ring in R.sub.3, on an aryl ring in R.sub.4 or R.sub.5, on an aryl ring in R.sub.1 or R.sub.2, or on an aryl ring formed by R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is CO.sub.2 H or NHSO.sub.2 R.sub.6. R.sub.6 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl. R.sub.7 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, or together with R.sub.8 forms a double bond. R.sub.8 is H or together with R.sub.7 forms a double bond.
