Abstract

Electrically conductive polyaniline and its derivatives are prepared by polymerizing compounds of the Formula: ##STR1## wherein R is --H, --OH, lower alkoxy, halogen, --COOH, --NO.sub.2 or --NH.sub.2 ; x is 0 to 4, with substitutions being ortho or meta to the amine group; R' is hydrogen or lower alkyl; comprising reacting the compound of Formula I with an initiator in the presence of a chemical oxidant and/or an applied electrochemical potential, said initiator comprising a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic amine which has a lower oxidation potential than the compound of Formula I, and which is capable of being incorporated into the polymer chain resulting from the polymerization reaction.
