Abstract

A pharmaceutical iodophor preparation having predictable microbicidal effectiveness and long duration of action comprising polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine (PVPI), free iodine, a source of iodide ions and a source of iodate ions, the preparation having a ratio of available (titratable) iodine to iodide between 2:1 and 10:1, a pH between 5 and 6 and a free iodine concentration between 2 and 20 ppm, wherein the amount of iodate ion in the preparation is sufficient to maintain the free iodine concentration between 2 and 20 ppm for at least 12 months at 20.degree. C.
