Abstract
A process for preparing an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene by the polymerization of ethylene using a catalyst comprising a solid catalyst component and an organometallic compound, characterized in that said solid catalyst component is a product obtained by contacting the following [A] and [B] together: PA0 [A] the reaction product of a magnesium dihalide and a titanium compound represented by the general formula Ti(OR).sub.4 wherein R is a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; PA0 [B] the reaction product of an aluminum trihalide and a silicon compound represented by the general formula Si(OR').sub.4 wherein R' is a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms.
