Abstract
A pedal assembly having a pedal spindle, a pedal body rotatably mounted on the pedal spindle, and a brake assembly. The brake assembly includes a brake arm which includes a brake tab for engaging the pedal spindle. The brake arm is selectively positioned between a first position in which the brake tab engages the pedal spindle to restrict rotation of the pedal body and a second position in which the brake tab is disengaged from the pedal spindle. The brake arm is biased by a spring into the first position. A foot pad may be provided on the brake arm for actuation by the user and a pedal spindle insert may be located over the pedal spindle to engage the brake arm. The pedal spindle, brake tab and spindle insert may include multiple, serrated, ratcheted, pointed, or gripping surfaces to increase frictional engagement. Alternately, the brake assembly includes a resistance ring located on the pedal spindle, a spring for preventing rotation of the resistance ring, and a pawl located on the pedal body for engaging the resistance ring to restrict reverse relative rotation of the pedal body.
