Abstract
An improved process for the preparation of sulfurized overbased alkaline earth metal phenates comprises steps of: PA1 (a) sulfurizing an alkylphenol with a sulfur halide in an alkane solvent; PA1 (b) neutralizing the sulfurized alkylphenol with an alkaline earth metal compound in a mixed solvent comprising an alkane and a lower alkanol to produce a sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenate; PA1 (c) carbonating said phenate with carbon dioxide to produce an overbased phenate; and PA1 (d) filtering and solvent stripping the reaction mixture to recover the phenate product. The products have a high degree of sulfurization with a substantial portion of monosulfide bonds and are substantially free from alkylene oxide residues.
